When small pieces, as little as one micrometer in size, come together in complex layers, they give birth to a new formation. Like this bear dress, if we break it down into its smallest units, it is made up of small, medium and large bears. These building blocks have the same genetic makeup, that is, the same deoxyribonucleic acid = DNA as its final product. The same concept applies to the dog dress. We drew this inspiration from the way living organisms are created in nature. From a different perspective, this book is a collaborative effort between photographer and head stylist, each with their own unique styles = a harmonious layering of creativity. As if a piece of pop art were eroding and exposing a layer of mod.

Our artwork is featured on the cover of RICH magazine / issue 01: Music Saves Our Lives, which launched in April 2010. The balloons that make the word RICH show off the various properties of balloons, from its roundness to its elasticity and tension. The work on the inside pages are inspired by the theme of Live=Sound. When a balloon bursts, it produces an explosive bang and when they rub against each other, the sound makes us feel uneasy. We wanted to highlight the silent tranquility that occurs right before the moment of catastrophe and have the girl flutter down where the two moments meet.

We exhibited 14 works at the “Chocolate A-Z Exhibition”held at Harbour City, Hong Kong’s largest shopping mall. The entire exhibit spanned a 70-meter stretch of walkway. This exhibition was curated by Hong Kong creative studio, AllRightsReserved, and featured chocolate in all its glory through the A-Z of chocolate-focused artwork and products. 35 artists and designers created works for this exhibit. Knowing this event would draw well-known artists, we wanted to shine a massive light toward the hidden talent within Japan and show off the shadows it casted. In this stagnant Japanese economy, innovation is critical, but at the same time, we need to put the spotlight on things that are still in the dark. This should be Japan’s next step. When you look into a bright flashlight, you see a shadow the moment you close your eyes. In a similar way, we hope our vivid colors and dynamic visuals have seared a lasting impression into the minds of the viewers who traversed the walkway and that they will remember that it represents Japan’s path toward progress.

Flowing. Airy. Fluttering. These are the 3 movements that inspired our work and it is through our work that we push the boundaries of balloon art. In the world of possibilities, we get back to the basics and ask, what exactly is a balloon dress, is it wearable? We take the dress apart into its basic pieces and liberate ourselves from our preconceived notions of balloons. Our quest is not only to create new forms, but to explore the properties of balloons, from color and radiance to texture and durability. We created this book not to tell a story, but to serve as a manual to reveal the possibilities of balloon art.
